Title: Mumble vs. Discord
Post by: Fjerreiro on October 28, 2016, 04:20:02 PM
Heya SentinelCrafters,

Lately there have been some discussions about whether we  should keep using Mumble or switch to Discord for our server's voice chat.
The last time the voice chat was discussed, the community also had a say in this. So, we're asking all of you guys to vote on the poll above!

The poll will remain open for 3 days. If you want to explain your vote you can do so in a comment below this post.

I feel that Discord is more accessible, as it has a browser version and downloadable apps. Mumble was only downloadable on a non-mobile device.

And discord also has a clear text channel by default, together with voice.

Mumble has a downloadable app on the Play Store and the iPhone one. It's called Plumble on the play store and Mumble in the iPhone one.

I voted to keep Mumble as Sentinelcraft's voice chat client of choice. My whole reasoning behind this thought is present as an article in the fifth release of the Sentinelcraft Magazine. Since it is quite long (and also for the sake of swift browsing), I'm not going to bother pasting it here.

I voted for discord as mumble is kinda outdated as far as i can tell. Discord is constantly being updated and are gonna be adding features like video sharing and new channel options as well. Better discord is an option too which is basically an addon that allows you to customize discord much more from themes to overlay.

I'm banned on Mumble, so I'm voting Discord (top kek).

There was this thing a server I played on had for Discord, where you could see the text chat in-game, and they could see in-game chat... Just saying.

The server Voice chat is intended to continue SM+ so We don't want that to happen

I suggest, because Discord will inevitably win, we abandon the Skype chat.  As far as I know, there are multiple Skype chats, such as the Town of Salem Skype chat, and I think this is pretty much useless by now.  Discord allows for multiple chats, so we can just make different rooms instead of keeping a bunch of useless Skype conversations.  That being said, it wouldn't be too bad if we allowed anyone into the new Discord group.  Again, we can make multiple voice chats and text chats, and Discord allows for the grouping of users, so it would be easy to make an ALL, SM, etc. chat.

Those groups, except the SM one, were created by community members, not by SentinelCraft staff.

Since Discord is obviously leading by alot. I have setup a test Discord server to take the place of mumble. We may yet abandon it for a new incantation in the future, but for now this will suffice. I will post a link here in short order.

Here is the link for the SM chat on Discord. Over the coming weeks I will be integrating the various channels and services under this main server. Skype will still remain the main source of server information and communication, this will just be a supplemental chat service for now. We can re-evaluate our stance on this in a few months.
