Quick item despawn

I'm not sure if this is an intended feature

When I'm clearing water with sponges nothing is particularly wrong until i go and break the sponges after clearing the water. the blocks i dont pick up immediately despawn and i end up losing sponges as a result. i previously had 2 stacks of sponges and i now notice i have under a single stack.

I'm not sure if this is actually an issue on my end or the servers end but if this is actually a bug i fear those who are dismantling beacons might end up going through something similar if not fixed soon.

How sure are you that the sponges are not going into some other water stream that's nearby, or that you're missing sponges while pick up? The items stack if you break alot around one another so you could have had the entities dropping at another area and then you expected them to be closer to you? I personally never had this problem and I break blocks fairly fast, would require more than one report to confirm this. Our despawn rates should be 5 minutes in a loaded chunk.
