Warp to random location request
« on: March 21, 2015, 11:22:46 PM »
Someone asked this on the server, but as we do not have one, alas, I said no. But! I feel as if adding /random, or something like that, to the /warplist, and having it send you to a random location, or even a random biome that is used with /warplist (i.e it sends you to /desert, or it sends you to /plains) would be useful. Most of the locations around the /warplist warps have either been destroyed, or colonized. If you want to start a town, you need to do a bit of wandering, which isn't a bad idea in itself, but nonetheless. Having a feature such as this, that allows you to be rocketed to random coords would work great for new players, who want their own little area to settle, and maybe make a hobbit hole, or something similar. Hopefully something like this can be implemented, as this may even prove useful to veteran players, such as myself, in creating a town, or building an underground bunker in which we store all of our precious belongings.

One downfall that I do see from this becoming a thing, is that this may provide easier access to peoples houses, or may accidentally teleport people into towns. So a way to prevent this, could be to build hubs at different locations in the wilderness, and allow people to use the command to be teleported to there.

Everyone can do that, yes. But at the same time, everyone has done that.

Most of the locations around the /warplist warps have either been destroyed, or colonized.

How is it a pointless thread? Its a perfectly useful idea, and a sound request. What I was getting at was that everyone is fully capable of doing that, yes, but at the same time, everyone has done it. I live in a very secluded area, in between Kamlak, and the ruins of Deity. If I were to found a town, I would still have to do a good amount of walking. Now, a person walking from spawn, or walking from a warplist location, will still have to do a multitude of walking. Every single piece of information, and more, that would be expected from someone requesting a feature, is here.

What I was getting at was that everyone is fully capable of doing that, yes, but at the same time, everyone has done it.

I don't understand this. If anyone is getting the same priviledges at the moment, why would we change now? Making people teleport randomly all around the world would be unfair, a huge disadvantage for people who walked, and potentially a risk. Having random teleports would help on having more grief reports.
 - Unfair: People do not place any effort towards finding a secure place for their own. Also having the warps helps us understand who has been patient to do the walk and also helps on listing all the idiot griefers that only join for that mean.
 - Huge disadvantage: People who walked would pretty much be disappointed if they know that new players can now randomly teleport anywhere to start. It also would be a big disadvantage for the server, by consuming useless map space for future updates.
 - Abusive: This could be abused in various means. The one is to have a randomly new member teleporting inside of another player's house. This is a massive no towards this idea, sorry. It's impossible to lock every single place that has a house from anyone. Another abuse that could happen is to spam this feature until you are near someone and attack them (Thus leading to the disadvantage to the people who walked for their own safety that I talked about).

This is a good suggestion though, it has been discussed in the past but it has horrible disadvantages that discart their use ;).

I mentioned two of those disadvantages I believe, make hubs that you can teleport to. Instead of having it be biome specific, it can just be randomized (to them), but I do see what you mean with the disadvantages. I do hope this idea is brought up sometime in the near future.

point less as in what your asking has nothing to gain...... you already said people can walk and use the pre created warps if we did "hubs" it would be the same thing what we have now cept with out the CHOICE of what biome to go hence this idea holds nothing to add

Nothing to add except ease of movement, and better locations to live at.

If you want a less populated area, then walk. Plenty of other players have, I see no reason to help players that choose to be lazy.

I understand what you are saying Code, Everyone has done it so even the areas around those hubs are becoming over-populated. We keep an eye on this and have in the past changed the warp locations once those areas become completely overwhelmed. You just havent been around when we have done this.

As Migas has so eloquently laid out things out, I will just expand on it a bit.

Lets give an example:
NewPlayer starts on the server, reads the rules, and then asks how to find a nice place to build. Someone responds with /random and NewPlayer goes ahead and uses that command. Now NewPlayer has teleported at random, to the middle of my personal island. (Maybe even to a part that shows none of my builds yet). NewPlayer starts building, mining, ect. Now... that leads to a very uncomfortable situation. Its not NewPlayers fault that they are there... since the command took them there. But I very obviously have staked claim to the island (by virtue of a little wall around the entire thing). The best way to resolve the situation is to make it impossible to happen.

So that rules out /random taking you to any random point on the map.

if /random just took you to one of our predetermined biomes, then there would be little reason to have it.

It is a good suggestion, We have just reviewed this like 3 times... at length. There really is no way to go about bringing it to fruition that we can determine. Thank you for your suggestion, keep it up. You never know, you might happen upon something we havent thought of.
