Oh, yes...Debu, I've played Sky Wars multiple times with friends. I think I can explain it a bit better.
In the Sky Wars I've played, there are at least 4-8 islands in a circle about 10-20 blocks separated each. In the middle of all them, is a fairly large island with chests full of useful goodies. On your island each of the players start with different items in chests, whether it's leather tunics, wooden swords, and even maybe a diamond chestplate or bow. Could be anything that you start out with. But anyways, when I've played sky wars I race to the middle island without giving a crap about anyone else throwing snowballs at me or pelting my face with snowballs while trying to bridge over. On your island there is also a little bit of coal, gold, iron and maybe even a diamond. Below I've made a little diagram showing the islands. O = Islands where players will spawn U = Center Island with chests
