1.14 Guide

Overview

This guide is my best effort to walk you through the new stuff, and especially the new changes in 1.14. You are also welcome to look at the Minecraft Wiki's patch notes here if you think this is a bit too long.

Welcome to 1.14.4, the final release of the 1.14 Village and Pillage update! Village and Pillage was first announced on September 29th, 2018. 1.14.4 was released on July 19th, 2019 and is the final release of the 1.14 Village and Pillage update.

Changes to Existing Mechanics

Texture Changes!
The biggest and most obvious change by far, is the new 1.14 textures. 1.14 updated the classic Minecraft textures. If you have been playing Minecraft for a long time, you may prefer the textures you are used to. Fortunately, Mojang was kind enough to leave an option to revert to the old textures if you so desire.

To change back, press the ''Escape'' key, click ''Options'', then click ''Resource Packs''. Next click on ''Programmer Art'', and it should appear on the right side of the screen. Press ''Ok', and wait for the textures to load up. This may take some time, don't panic!

Villager Changes
The update is named Village and Pillage after all, so it's no surprise villagers were the main focus! Because the villager changes are long and complex, and not everyone uses or cares about villagers, these changes will be covered in a separate post. Just to summarize that essentially everything about villagers is different in 1.14.

Dyes
Dyes have been updated to be more consistent with each other. This means that bonemeal, ink sacs, cocoa beans, and Lapis Lazuli can no longer be used directly as dyes. They must first be crafted into white dye, black dye, brown dye, and blue dye respectively.

Signs
Signs now are split into each of the wood variants (oak, jungle, etc). You can also change the color of the text by right clicking the sign with dye!

Smooth Stone
Smooth stone, which was only available in creative, can now be obtained in survival by smelting stone! Stone slabs are now a dark texture that matches normal stone. The old normal stone slab texture now belongs to smooth stone slabs. Update your builds accordingly!

Carpet
Non-white carpet can now be crafted similarly to glass, by surrounding a dye with white carpet.

Chorus Flowers
Can now be broken by being hit with an arrow or trident.

Vines
Vines no longer need a supporting block

Phantoms
Phantoms are now scared of cats! Something to keep those sky rats away!

1.14 Guide

New Mobs

Cats
Cats were already in Minecraft, but they were a tamed version of the ocelot. In 1.14, cats are now a separate mob that has a chance to spawn in villages. Cats will now sleep in your bed with you, and their collars can now be dyed like dogs! They will also randomly give its owner a gift each time they sleep on top of the owner.

Foxes
Foxes spawn in Taiga and Giant Tree Tiaga biomes. A white variant spawns in Snowy Tiaga biomes. Foxes will attack and kill certain passive mobs on sight, and a tamed fox will defend its owner from hostile mobs. Adult foxes cannot be tamed. They must be fed Sweet Berries to breed a tamed baby fox.

Pandas
Spawn in Bamboo Jungles exclusively. Pandas can have one of six random personalities. They will follow a player who is carrying bamboo. Breeding requires at least 8 bamboo blocks in a 5 block radius of the pandas, and right clicking two pandas with bamboo.

Mooshrooms
There is now a brown variant of the usually red mooshroom. The brown variant will only appear if a mooshroom is struck by lightning.

Pillagers
Hostile grey-skinned variants of the villagers. They wield crossbows, and are part of the new raid mechanic.

Ravagers
Large grey beasts of war. They only spawn as part of the raid mechanic, and are hostile. Their neck can extend, giving them a very long reach.

Trader Llamas
Trader Llamas spawn in pairs with a wandering trader. Have an exclusive design compared to other llamas. They will despawn unless they are removed from the lead by killing the wandering trader. They can be tamed like normal llamas, and will defend their owner.

Wandering Trader
A variant of villagers, the wandering trader is a rare spawn. Every 20 minutes, the game chooses a random player and tries to spawn a wandering trader near them. This has a 2.5-7.5% chance of succeeding, increasing as spawn attempts fail. On average, it takes 14.2 Minecraft days (about 5 hours) for one wandering trader to spawn.

The wandering trader trades a limited amount of items that are rare, including coral and tropical fish buckets for emeralds. The wandering trader will automatically despawn when all trades are locked, or after 48 minutes.

1.14 Guide

New Blocks

Added a TON of new stairs, slabs, and walls. Check the Minecraft Wiki or here for a full list.

Added Smokers and Blast furnaces. Smokers cook food twice as fast, and Blast furnaces cook ores twice as fast.

Bamboo
Bamboo spawns naturally in jungle biomes. Bamboo will grow on grass blocks, dirt, sand, gravel, mycelium, podzol, coarse dirt or red sand. It can be crafted into sticks or scaffolding, or used as fuel. It can also be bonemealed. Bamboo can be placed in flower pots.

Barrels
A new storage block made from wooden planks and wood slabs. A barrel can hold just as much as a chest, but can be opened with a block above it. They work with hoppers.

Note: if you have a large storage room, switching from chests to barrels will SIGNIFICANTLY increase your fps due to how chests are rendered.

Bells
Bells are a new block that cannot be crafted. They can only be obtained from 1.14 naturally generated villages, or from trading with an armorer villager. Ringing a bell using right click will wake sleeping villagers, and highlight nearby raid mobs.

Campfire
Another new light source made from sticks, coal, and wood logs. The fire does not destroy items, but will damage players. You can cook food with the campfire by right clicking it. The campfire emits smoke particles that would look awesome in a chimney! You can put out the campfire with water, and relight it with fire.

Cartography table
A new block made from paper and wood planks. This block tremendously simplifies crafting and duplicating maps.

Cornflower
Can be crafted into blue dye. Spawn naturally in plains biomes.

Composter
Composters are a new block made from wooden fences and wood planks. Right clicking it or using a hopper to put crops into it has a chance to produce bonemeal!

Grindstone
Made from sticks, stone slabs, and wood planks. The grindstone can repair two items placed into it by combining them. It can also remove enchantments from items, and convert it to xp. Essential in any pigman farm!

Lantern
A new light source made from iron nuggets and a torch. It gives off 16 light, and can be hung from the bottom or top of most blocks.

Lecterns
A new block made from bookshelves and wood slabs. You can place written books on the lectern to read, and it can be used in redstone.

Lily of the Valley
Can be crafted into white dye. Spawns naturally in forest biomes.

Loom
A new block made from string and wood planks. It makes crafting banners much easier

Scaffolding
Scaffolding is a new block made from bamboo and string that is meant to be scaffolding when building. It is affected by gravity. The player can climb up and down like a ladder or vine.

Sweet berry bushes
Spawn naturally in all tiaga biome variants. They drop sweet berries, an edible food, when fully grown with right click. They grow on grass blocks, dirt, podzol, coarse dirt, or farmland. Sweet berry bushes damage players and mobs that walk through them.

Wither Rose
Can be crafted into black dye. Wither roses damage players and all non-wither mobs when stood in. They can be planted in flower pots. Wither roses do not spawn naturally. Instead, they are only dropped when the wither kills another mob.

1.14 Guide

Raids

Raids are a new optional ''boss fight''. You essentially defend villagers from waves of hostile attacking pillagers, witches, evokers, and even Ravagers! If you win the raid (by killing all the attackers), you receive the hero of the village effect. This effect gives you additional temporary trading discounts with the villagers, and causes them to give you free gifts of rare items.

To start a raid, you need to obtain the Bad Omen effect by killing a leader pillager from a naturally spawned patrol or an outpost. Outposts are new rare 1.14 structures, patrols are spawned groups of pillagers. The leader pillager will have a banner with a pillager pattern on it. Once you obtain the bad omen effect, find a villager who has claimed a bed, and start preparing as the raid ''charges up.'' The pillagers will attack in waves. You lose the raid if all the villagers are killed, or if all of the beds are destroyed. You win the raid by killing all the hostile mobs.

Miscellaneous Changes

Biomes
Added Bamboo Jungle, where pandas and bamboo can naturally spawn. Tweaked Tiaga biome generation to include sweet berries and foxes.

Crossbows
Added crossbows, which are similar to bows but can be loaded without firing, and shoot further. Crossbows are able to be loaded with either arrows or firework rockets. They can also be enchanted to hit multiple mobs.

Ocelots
Can no longer be tamed/turned into cats. Instead they ''trust'' the player.

Pillager Outposts
Added Pillager Outposts, which are new structures based around the pillager mob. Pillagers (and only pillagers) will spawn naturally in and around the Outpost, similar to guardians in Ocean Monuments. The range of exclusive pillager spawning is approximately 14 blocks below, 21 blocks above, and 17 blocks in all four directions horizontally (all measurements inclusive) from the physical Outpost. Pillagers will spawn on any spawnable block (ignoring time of day) if the block light level there is below 11. This means you can stop Pillager spawning at these Outposts like any other monster: lighting up the ground. Pillager Outposts can generate in the following biomes:

 - Plains
 - Desert
 - Savanna
 - Tiaga
 - Snowy Tiaga
 - Snowy Tundra

Villages
Totally overhauled village generation. Villages now spawn with a bell to indicate the center of the village, generate with beds, and otherwise are much larger and more detailed. The villagers inside also have biome specific skins.

1.14 Villagers Guide

Workstations
In 1.13 and below, villagers were assigned a career at birth, or after being cured from a zombie villager. In addition, villagers restocking their trades in 1.13 and below was random, and a random chance tied to how times you traded with them. This is no longer the case in 1.14. When born, villagers have no profession and wear default brown robes. Right clicking one will do nothing. You must place a workstation within 48 blocks of the villager, in such a way that it can pathfind to it. Then it will take a profession associated with that block. The workstation profession correspondence is below:

BarrelFisherman
Blast FurnaceArmorer
Brewing StandCleric
Cartography Table         Cartographer
CauldronLeatherworker
ComposterFarmer
Fletching TableFletcher
GrindstoneWeapon Smith
LecternLibrarian
LoomShepard
Smithing TableTool Smith
SmokerButcher
StonecutterStone Mason

Day cycle
Villagers now have a set schedule during the day that they follow, based on the Minecraft day. Note that a Minecraft day is 24,000 ticks, or 20 minutes assuming no lag. The start of the day is 0 ticks, with noon being 6000 ticks, sunset 12000 ticks, and midnight 18000 ticks. With this in mind villagers obey the following schedule:

10 ticks - 1999 ticks Wander and gossip
2000 ticks - 8999 ticks Work at workstation (If available.)
9000 ticks - 12999 ticks Wander and gossip
13000 ticks - 9 ticks Sleep in a bed (If available.)

If villagers can't find their workstation at tick 2000, it forgets that workstation. Villagers will lose their profession and become the default villager if they lose their workstation AND have not been traded with.

Note that a villager can be deviated from this schedule if desired. If a villager has no bed assigned, it obviously cannot sleep. Ringing a bell will wake any nearby villagers up. A hostile nearby mob will also wake villagers up and cause them to ''panic''. Remember that a villager only needs to sleep if you want it to spawn Iron Golems. Villagers do not need a bed to restock from their workstation. Conversely, villagers do not need a workstation to breed. They also only need to be able to ''see'' their bed, and do not need to sleep to continue breeding indefinitely.

Restocking
Note: Villagers are currently affected by bug MC-157136. This means that villagers will always restock their trades when they are next to their workstations, instead of twice every 12000 ticks as intended. Infinite restocking, while nice, is not intended and will be fixed by Mojang in 1.15 has been fixed by Mojang as of snapshot 19w34a.

At tick 2000 of the day, villagers will automatically walk to their workstation (if they can) and and look down at it. The workstation will make a related noise if restocking is successful (i.e. rustling papers sound for lectern, or the opening sound of the barrel). If your villager doesn't restock its trades, this means that either it doesn't have a workstation, or it cannot reach its workstation. Villagers can restock even if they are inside a minecart, provided they are close enough to their workstation.

Trading
Note: Villagers are currently affected by bug MC-157136. This means that demand will be artificially low, since demand is calculated at restocking. This will be fixed by Mojang in 1.15 has been fixed by Mojang as of snapshot 19w34a.

Villager trading in 1.14 is influenced by two new mechanics: gossip and discounts. Gossip is a system where villagers keep track of how much they like you. They share this information with other villagers they can see during the day. Positive gossip is obtained by trading with a villager, and curing a zombie villager to a villager. This will cause the villager to reduce or discount their prices. Negative gossip is obtained when a player harms or kills a villager. This will cause the villagers to increase their prices. Due to this, be extremely careful when trading with villagers! Accidentally hitting a villager will cause all nearby villagers to raise their prices. Note that villagers have a chance to forget gossip every 24000 ticks.

A zombie villager who has been cured will never forget your kind deed. Thus, to obtain the lowest possible prices, you need to infect and cure a villager 5 times. On Sentinel, a villager has a 50% chance to die from being infected. The ideal scenario, is infecting and curing default villagers from a breeder repeatedly until they survive 5 curings, then placing and breaking their workstation until they have the trades you desire.

Breeding
Villager breeding in 1.13 and below was based on the amount of wooden doors that the villagers could detect. This system suffered from numerous flaws. It prevented players from using wooden doors within hundreds of blocks of the villagers, it was extremely complex to a casual player, and it required breeders to be built above ground.

Instead of doors, villagers require beds to breed in 1.14.4. A pair of villagers requires 3 beds (one for each parent, and one for the potential baby) to initiate successful breeding. As before, villagers also require at least 12 carrots, potatoes or beetroots, or 3 bread (1 portion) in their inventory. Villagers can hold up to 8 stacks of food in their inventory, but only 4 stacks may be the same type of food. Note that villagers will use one portion of food each time they try to breed, regardless of if they fail or not. This makes it imperative to notice and fix any loss of beds immediately to prevent food waste.

In 1.14.4, villagers need to be able to pathfind to their beds, and their future baby's bed to breed. This means they need to believe they can walk to their bed, without it being true. This can be accomplished by trapping the villagers in trapdoors (all mobs believe they can walk through trapdoors). Because the baby is born able to pathfind to their bed, they need to be moved to a spot where they cannot pathfind to their bed before nightfall. This will cause the parents to forget about their lost child, and attempt to breed another.

Final Note
As a living thing, villagers are extremely complex and this guide can seem overwhelming. Please feel more than welcome to ask me any and all questions about villagers that you may have. I promise no question is too stupid or useless, and I am more than happy to help you in making breeders or trading halls!

/T Spawn market use the warp to the farm and get all the bamboo you wanna have. It's great with bonemeal, what you also can get at the market.
